Dance Superobics/Wendy’s circuit

Why you like that particular classes:

I love the energy, pace and music at dance superobics… and that you can unleash your inner Beyoncé/Madge/Gaga.  I also enjoy Jane’s chat and general perkiness.  The dance routines change frequently and aren’t like those boring repetitive gym classes.
Circuit is a great workout and gives me a real sense of achievement.   The boxerise “warm up” is hard work but gets rid of stress and leaves me feeling virtuous as the weekend approaches!

.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

About 4 years.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

It’s friendly and affordable and there’s a range of classes to pick from.

How does exercise benefit you?

When I’m feeling tired or I’ve had a bad day, it always lifts me and I’m always glad I made the effort to come.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Wine and cheese and singing along (badly) to the music in dance superobics.

Virtues (same):

I give it my all!

Advice to others:

Give a range of classes a go and see what works for you.

Word from Jane/Wendy on why they are member of the month

Katie is one of those class members you can always rely on to be there, she's a real regular and comes to class come rain or shine. She always goes for it (as she says, she gives it her all) and she's always near the front keeping us going too! Katie always has a smile and a positive energy and we really appreciate that. Well done Katie, you're a star!

Dance Fit & Tone and Pilates

Why you like that particular classes:

Dance Fit & Tone for the funk (I’ve been boogie-ing since the late 70s and I’m still going strong) and Pilates for inner strength and better posture.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

About 3 years.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

I was looking for an exercise class on Saturday mornings whilst my daughter was having music lessons. My husband found JCW on line and Dance Fit and Tone and said ”Hey, Tiz, I think I’ve found a class with your name on it”. How right he was!

How does exercise benefit you?

In ALL the ways Jane tells you it does.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Nothing my husband can’t live with...

Virtues (same):

Attending JCW Fitness classes has always been a pleasure, not a chore. It’s ‘me’ time and my treat and I feel disappointed if I am not able to make a class because of work or other commitments.

Advice to others:

You have to climb the mountain to be able to enjoy the view. You can take it step by step, there are benches on the way and there’s always someone to walk alongside you...

Word from Jane on why they are member of the month

Tiz is always full of energy and I love how she keeps dancing, even in our water breaks! She always has a smile and goes for it. I will never forget the night she got a cab and a babysitter to get to class, now that's what I call commitment! Also, over the last year we have seen Tiz transform physically, she has lost a lot of weight and toned up amazingly, by doing weight watchers and regular exercise. Tiz, you look FABULOUS and you're a superstar lady, well done!

Why you like that particular classes:

They are such a lot of fun, you don’t even feel like its hard work! It’s just a good way to exercise without the stress, and such good fun with Peter he makes exercise effortless.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

4 months now and I am still very happy with the classes.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

Very good value for money and excellent teachers, and a fun place to get fit and of course it’s local for me.

How does exercise benefit you?

I feel happy now, previously I have been unhappy with my body – I was feeling fat and out of shape, and now I feel great .

This summer I felt so fat (see picture) but now I feel confident and happy thanks to lovely Peter xxx and I have lost over a stone and a half!

Advice to others:

Try Peter’s classes, they are very easy to follow and loads of laughs in between! Just keep going remembering it’s your time to have fun and workout.

Word from Peter on why they are member of the month

Fenelle always really goes for it, she’s so loyal and always comes to class – she’s great fun and always makes jokes and makes a great fun atmosphere for everyone in the class.  She always gives motivational chats to new people and puts them at ease and makes them welcome, which is much appreciated.  She sings along to all the songs, especially our duet “Time and Tide” by Basia! Of course I’ve watched Fenelle lose weight and transform, and she looks FABULOUS darling!!! WELL DONE FENELLE!

Peter is also his own best testimonial having lost TWO STONE doing Zumba!!!

Favourite classes:

Pilates – I have enjoyed both Jane’s and Rachel’s classes.

Why you like that particular classes:

I have medical problems with my hip and back and my consultant strongly advised me to take up pilates. I was very overweight when I started and they helped me to become more flexible.  Classes take into account different levels of ability and I am able to do so much more than when I started.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

For nearly two years.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

I knew Jane and I knew that she would not push me and that I would be able to work within my limitations.  Also, Jane reassured me that I would not feel judged or embarrassed (which I wasn’t).  I have been a member of about six gyms and hardly ever gone so the flexibility of Jane’s classes were ideal for me.

How does exercise benefit you?

Pilates has helped to strengthen my back which can be quite painful.  Pilates has been great for toning my stomach as I lose weight.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

I am an ‘all or nothing person’ which can be a vice or a virtue.

Virtues (same):

As above.

Advice to others:

I joined the pilates groups with my good friend Nina and when I have needed a bit of motivation, especially on a Monday morning class, Nina has always encouraged me.  I definitely believe that going along to classes with a friend is a great help as neither of us wants to let the other down.

Word from Jane on why they are member of the month

Amanda has transformed before my very eyes over the last two years and has lost a whopping five and a half stone!!  She has combined diet with Pilates, and the Pilates has helped to keep her on track and to target her tummy muscles as she has lost weight.  She is inspirational to people who feel embarrassed about their weight, and is living proof that something CAN be done to change it.  She looks totally amazing, and we are so proud of you Amanda, well done!!

Favourite classes:

Pilates with both Jane and Rachel.

Why you like that particular classes:

After a serious back injury and a year of intensive physiotherapy, acupuncture and various other treatments, my consultant advised me to try Pilates.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

Nearly two years.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

It was through my good friend Amanda, a fellow member of the month (!), that I came to know Jane. I was incredibly scared about trying anything new because I thought it might aggravate my back and possibly set me back. Jane was so welcoming and re-assuring and her class had so many options of varying difficulty that I never felt like the odd one out or the special needs case!

How does exercise benefit you?

My back is a work in progress. I love the camaraderie and friendly atmosphere in all the JCW classes and I can truly say that Pilates has changed my life. I have since also taken up Rachel’s Pilates classes which I love. Her yoga background brings out a different dimension to her classes and I’ve never felt so strong! Both Jane and Rachel are amazing and have taught me techniques that help me in my everyday life.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Baking, pretending it’s purely for the pleasure of my children...Chocolate...the list goes on...!

Virtues (same):

From never having had a gym membership in my life to working my way up from Bronze to Silver and now Gold!

Advice to others:

For anyone who has an injury or just generally wants to feel fitter and stronger, then I couldn’t recommend JCW highly enough. Sometimes you just have to work through the pain to reach your goals; I know I did/am!

Word from Jane on why they are member of the month

Nina was so nervous about exercise, but overcame the nerves to start the Pilates classes.  I have watched her over the two years totally transform in both ability and confidence!  She can do a back extension perfectly and with a massively increased range of movement through her back – a joy to see.  Well done Nina, you’re proof that Pilates and hard work together really works! I am very proud of what you have achieved – well done.

Too hard to decide!  I enjoy having the variety and try to do one class every week day.

Why you like that particular classes:

Pilates with Jane on Monday morning is a great way to start the week and stretch out the weekend’s excesses.

I love Super Seniors and Fit Toned and Fabulous with Wendy as she somehow gets you to be far more energetic than you thought you could be and it’s still fun.
Wednesday evening Pilates with Rachel makes me feel wonderfully spiritual and floaty.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

About 3 years.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

My friend, Pat, was keen to start Pilates so when a JCW flyer arrived through her letterbox she persuaded me to go along with her.

How does exercise benefit you?

Let me count the ways! When I retired 4 years ago I was stressed, overweight and feeling very old.  Now I am more flexible and strong, confident about moving and balancing, and consequently feel younger. And, of course, I’ve lost weight but, more importantly, I’ve changed the shape of my body by toning up the right bits!

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

An inability to say no – especially to alcohol!

Virtues (same):

Conscientiousness – I try to put my all into everything I do.

Advice to others:

Try it – you’ll be surprised how good you feel.

Favourite classes:

Circuit Training

Why you like that particular classes:

Circuit training is great for burning off energy and releasing stress. There is plenty of variety to the exercises and each can be done at its own intensity. The warm-up is a mini-class all by itself and is the best protection against strains and sprains. The instructor enthusiasm, group work-out and fast pace give things a “no one gets left behind” feel which is encouraging rather than intimidating. Both Wendy’s and Robbie’s classes are good fun and I leave with a smile.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

4 years (first Pilates then Circuit Training)

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

The instructor-led classes offered flexible attendance and, compared with my previous gym membership, were much better value and much more effective.

How does exercise benefit you?

Sitting at a desk (and not cycling) for about 10 years slowly took its toll on my posture, flexibility, strength, weight and general fitness. I want to look after my health and especially need to counterbalance my work (which only exercises my mind). I now have a young son to keep up with and, once we have better babysitting arrangements, my wife will also be dragging me off to play tennis more regularly— it’s no fun huffing and puffing around the court. Circuit training has made me and kept me fitter than I’d been for years. I even have biceps!

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Eating Chunky Kit Kats; not getting enough sleep; abjectly failing to cycle to either work or circuit class since last winter; not doing more about my poor posture.

Virtues (same):

No nicotine, alcohol or coffee; finally learning to skip with a rope (thanks to circuit class).

Advice to others:

Try a few different classes and speak to the instructors before and afterwards. Think honestly about what you hope to get out of regular attendance. Make the time commitment and mental and physical effort to work towards your goals. Enjoy it!

Word from Wendy on why they are member of the month

Giuliano has been attending JCW classes for many years and has been an integral member of my Tuesday night circuit class since it began!  He is continually challenging himself to work harder and get stronger and fitter.  It is really amazing to watch him as he leaves his comfort zone; he is always willing to give new exercises a go and gives 110% every week without fail! A familiar, friendly face at circuits and always a pleasure to have working in the class and even a chat after! Thank you for your continued support and keep up the fantastic work!  Congratulations! A title well deserved!

Why you like that particular classes:

I am not one for jumping around to music. I like the concentration & endurance that is required in both Yoga and Pilates

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

About two and a half years

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

I wanted to progress from beginner level and was recommended by fellow member Helen Durden

How does exercise benefit you?

Up until I reached 50 I hated all forms of exercise, however when increasingly regular back spasm meant time off work and curtailment of my favorite pastime gardening, I decided to take action. Practicing Pilates initially and then Yoga, has not only made me strong, fit & firm, it has given me confidence and taught me perseverance. No matter how lethargic I feel one class and my energy & optimism bounce back.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Slumping on my recliner watching TV

Virtues (same):

Lots of fresh air all year round

Advice to others:

You are never too old, too unfit, too fat or too nervous to start exercising! My first lesson terrified me but I persevered and it has changed my life.

Word from Rachel on why they are member of the month

Caroline brings a great energy to class. She always makes me smile! Caroline is completely committed to her classes and always arrives early and raring to go. She has worked so hard in my classes and this shows in her practice. Her focus and concentration has gained her increased strength flexibility and stamina. Well done Caroline.

Occupation:

Favourite classes:

Yoga and Pilates

Why you like that particular classes:

I did not expect to see and feel results so quickly from just attending these classes and that speaks volumes for the quality of Rachel's teaching. Both classes are great but yoga has the edge as I find it more challenging so it gives me a greater sense of achievement. Despite having no prior yoga experience and some concerns about my back, Rachel makes me believe that I can achieve the postures by being patient and working within my limits, and each week I am able to improve my postures a bit more. It's hard to express how good you feel after yoga practice - energised and calm at the same time, an amazing class.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

7 months

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

I contacted Jane after I was given her website details and her enthusiasm and encouragement initially persuaded me to try a week's trial membership. I liked the fact that I was made to feel welcome immediately, as well as the positive energy in the classes, so I've been going back ever since.

How does exercise benefit you?

Following a back injury, my level of fitness decreased considerably but attending the classes has improved my core strength and flexibility, which has greatly reduced my back pain. I'm also appreciating the improvements in muscle tone and posture, weight loss and feeling great as a result.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Not getting on my bike...and Bombay Sapphire.

Virtues (same):

Staying focused on attending as many classes as I can, which is easy (work and TfL permitting) as I always feel better afterwards.

Advice to others:

Join and you won't be disappointed. The teachers are excellent so you will definitely achieve your fitness goals whilst having fun and enjoying the journey, unlike gyms which are dull!

Word from Rachel on why they are member of the month

Since starting at JCW fitness last year Deana has hardly missed a pilates or yoga class with me, her dedication and hard work has paid off massively. Deana has really listened and taken on board any advice given and has gradually built her up practice from complete beginner to intermediate. She has built strength, increased flexibility and reduced her back pain. Well done Deana.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

9 months.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

Caroline (fellow JCW fitness member) recommended it to me. Its also fab value for money

How does exercise benefit you?

With my job being hard on my back, (I have to bend down and sit on the floor quite a lot), my back has become stronger. Since doing Yoga, I've also learnt how to relax if I'm having a stressful day.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Eating too much chocolate!

Virtues (same):

Being proud of myself for trying different forms of exercise, and realising I can do more than I knew I was capable of.

Advice to others:

Sticking at a form of exercise for a period of time can give you confidence, especially when you see the results.

Word from Rachel on why they are member of the month

Stephanie is in all of my classes without fail every week! She has so much determination and never gives in. Stephanie has built up her yoga and Pilates practice to a super strong level and this is all down to her hard work, tenacity and commitment. Well done Stephanie.

Dancesuperobics

Why you like that particular classes:

I like the pace, music and the fact that it does not matter what you look like - shape or size, or what you are wearing, every one is friendly and you can go at your own pace. There's also a real camaraderie amongst the class members and more importantly it's fun!

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

Three and a half years.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

Because the classes are local, the program is varied and dynamic (I intend to try out the Zumba on Fridays and I attended the Pilates classes for at least a year previously). I'm made to feel welcome and a valued member of the class, every one is friendly and I have made some good friends who will call if I don't attend and chivy me along.

How does exercise benefit you?

My body is generally much firmer all round, my stomach muscles are strengthened after having had two caesarians, and I have upper body strength. More importantly it's a stress buster!

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

Too many to mention!

Virtues (same):

My family now knows that attending super aerobics, or as my husband calls it "P.E." is sacred and very little gets in the way of me attending. For a couple of years my teenage daughter and her friends also came to classes which is testimony to the fact that all ages can benefit from the classes.

Advice to others:

Come along and stick at it and you will soon see the results, body and mind!

Word from Jane on why they are member of the month

Nikki is a brilliant participant, she always turns up consistently and regularly, and always with a smile. She once told me that she's never stuck at exercise before and I'm very proud to say that she has stuck with me. She brought her daughter Audrey and her friends for a while before they went to uni, and it was fantastic to teach a class with a mother and daughter together! Well done Nikki and thank you for being such a brilliant member.

Why you like that particular classes:

I LOVE to dance.

How long have you been attending JCW classes?

One year.

Why did you choose JCW Fitness?

Because Jane is a fantastic teacher, and inspired me. I volunteered to write a blog for her, and undertake a month's fitness challenge, discovered the joys of fitness, and am now terrified to stop!

How does exercise benefit you?

For me it is about stressbusting. I like the mental relaxation of having to focus on learning new steps, and feeling as if my head is connected to my body. I also love dancing with a group of (mostly) women, without any social pressure to look or be a particular way.

Vices (in life or in relation to fitness):

I tend to opt for sugar over exercise if I'm stressed.

Virtues (same):

I can be determined.

Advice to others:

Rediscover pleasure by doing something that is purely for you, and purely good for you!

Word from Jane on why they are member of the month

Ingrid brings a fabulous energy to every class she attends – she's always smiling and positive and gives 100%. Her positive energy is an inspiration both to me and other class members. She also did an amazing JCW Fitness blog a few months ago where she opened her heart to us all – thank you Ingrid!
